I feel your pain. It's a b****. I've been shopping too. Tough to get ahead of the flippers and butchers.

There is a G2 SD10 for sale right now on the forum. Good price. I just ordered a new Sho-bud Maverick II, should be here in 4 months. There are a lot of steels to be had, all decently priced, especially so few new steels being built these days. Flippers don't buy decently priced steels. The search all day trying to find an unusually low priced steel, otherwise there is no money to be made. If you want to get a steel at the price a flipper gets one, that means putting in the work that the flipper does: obsessively checking reverb, craigslist, estate sales, the forum, every day, multiple times a day. But if you want a good steel at at the going rate, there are plenty.

I'm talking used market too. As I said: There is a G2 Mullen SD 3x5 on the forum for $4,200 shipped. That is a great price. If you can't afford that, save your money. Steels cost what steels cost.

Back then, there were MANY more manufactures than there are today. And the lead time wasn't 2 years, it was 3 months. 20 years ago the Dallas show was filled with vendors and it was packed with attendees and buyers. That simply doesn't exist anymore. When I bought my first new MSA 20 years ago, there was no wait. They had inventory. Now, I'm waiting 2 years plus. Mullen's lead time is now 2 years, 2 years ago it was 3 months. Fewer new steels on the market means people are buying used. Which means less inventory. Which means higher prices. And not to put too fine a point on it, I don't know a single dealer or flipper that doesn't also play. Most also repair and have to often do significant repairs to the steel they buy.

We all wish things were the way they used to be. But the golden age of Pedal Steel is long gone. It is what it is. As for me, if I'm lucky enough to find a steel way under priced, I'm going to jump on it and flip it. That has happened to me exactly once. And I play my Mullen D10 every day for hours.
